Hoof N' Woof Story - Woman (Owner) holding lead on a big white horse (Percheron) in a barn

I’m Helen, and I own Hoof N’ Woof in Grosse Pointe Park, MI. Here’s a little bit about where it all started and why I love what I do.

Horses have been part of my heart for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dreamed of riding, even though my parents’ world revolved around the water—sailing, racing, and cruising wherever the wind would take them. Life, as it often does, led me down a different path. I married, raised two wonderful children, and spent more than twenty years working hard and putting my family first.

When I turned 51, I felt a gentle but persistent calling to finally do something just for myself. That was the year I decided to learn to ride. A couple of years later, I bought my first horse—and in many ways, found my way back to a dream that had patiently waited its turn. Alongside that journey came a strong desire for financial independence and the courage to build something of my own. I purchased a shipping business, and not long after, expanded that dream by opening Hoof N’ Woof, Grosse Pointe Park’s only tack store.

Today, this shop represents far more than saddles, boots, and bridles—it represents persistence, second chances, and the belief that it’s never too late to follow your passion. One of my greatest joys is fitting a child for their very first pair of riding boots and breeches, or better yet, their first show coat. Watching their confidence grow as they see themselves ready for the ring—standing taller, smiling brighter—is a moment I never tire of. It reminds me why this store exists: to support riders at every stage, celebrate their milestones, and be part of the memories they’ll carry with them forever.

We are proud to be a small, woman-owned business rooted in community, passion, and a genuine love for horses and the people who love them.
